Quartz Countertops Near Venice, Sarasota and Nokomis

Quartz countertops are an engineered surface made mostly of ground quartz bound with resin. Quartz is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and resists stains well, which makes it the lowest upkeep stone option. It is not heat proof, though, and it is best kept indoors, away from direct sun.

What is quartz?

Quartz countertops are engineered stone made mostly of ground natural quartz bound with resin. The surface is hard, non-porous and never needs sealing, and the color stays consistent across the slab. It is a low upkeep choice for indoor kitchens and bathrooms, but it does not belong in direct sun.

Manufacturers blend roughly 90 to 95 percent ground natural quartz with resins and pigments, then press and cure the mix into slabs. Many quartz designs imitate marble veining, while others are solid whites, grays or speckles. Because it is made in a factory, the slab you see in a photo is close to the slab you get.

What are the pros and cons of quartz?

Quartz trades a little heat tolerance for very easy care.

Pros

  • Never needs sealing.
  • Resists stains and everyday scratches.
  • Consistent color, which makes matching pieces easier.
  • Wide range of marble looks and solid colors.

Cons

  • Not heat proof: the resin can scorch or crack.
  • Not recommended for outdoor kitchens in direct sun.
  • Harsh chemicals can dull the surface.
  • Pattern is uniform, so it lacks the one of a kind feel of natural stone.

Is quartz good for Florida homes?

Yes, indoors. Quartz does not absorb moisture, so Florida humidity has no effect on it, and it is a great fit for kitchens, bathroom vanity tops and laundry rooms. The two limits are heat and sun: use trivets for hot pans, and keep quartz out of uncovered outdoor spaces.

Outdoors, ultraviolet light can change its color over time. For a lanai, look at granite countertops or porcelain countertops instead. Quartz is also a smart pick for second homes and rentals, because there is no sealing to keep up between visits.

Quartz and quartzite sound alike but behave differently. Our countertop materials comparison explains the difference in plain language.

How do you care for quartz?

Wipe quartz with mild dish soap and warm water, then dry it with a soft cloth. Skip oven cleaner, bleach and abrasive pads, which can dull the resin. Quartz is never sealed, at our shop or at home. Even though it resists stains, wipe up coffee, wine and spices promptly, and always set hot cookware on a trivet. Those two habits keep quartz looking new for years.

Can I see quartz at your Nokomis showroom?

Yes. You can see quartz at our showroom at 780 N Tamiami Trail in Nokomis and compare it with granite and quartzite in the same visit. Our stone catalog includes quartz colors such as Calacatta Napoles, Absolute White, Sparkling White, Calacatta Vienna Gold and Himalaya Black. Availability changes, so call ahead if you want a specific color. Seeing a full slab helps, since veined quartz designs repeat differently than a small sample suggests.

Quartz is one of the most requested choices for kitchen countertops in our area. When you have picked a few favorites, request your countertop estimate and we will help you choose the edge and sink.

FAQ

Quartz countertop questions

Still curious? Read more countertop questions, call us or stop by the showroom.

Is quartz heat proof?

No. Quartz handles everyday warmth, but the resin that binds it can scorch, discolor or crack when a hot pan goes straight from the burner to the counter. Use trivets for pots, pans and appliances that run hot. If you cook a lot and want more heat tolerance, compare quartz with granite or quartzite at our Nokomis showroom.

Does quartz need sealing?

No. Quartz is non-porous, so liquids cannot soak in and there is nothing to seal. That is the main reason people choose it. It still is not completely stain proof, so wipe up spills like coffee, wine and turmeric promptly, and clean with mild soap and water instead of harsh chemicals that can dull the resin.

Can I use quartz outdoors in Florida?

We do not recommend it. Long exposure to direct sunlight can fade or yellow the resin in many quartz surfaces, and most manufacturers advise indoor use only. For a lanai or outdoor kitchen, granite, quartzite or porcelain are better choices. A screened, fully shaded area is different, so ask us about your specific space before you decide.
