Which countertop material is best for a kitchen?
The best kitchen countertop depends on how you cook and how much upkeep you want. Quartz is the easiest to care for and never needs sealing. Granite and quartzite handle heat and heavy use with occasional sealing. Marble and dolomite offer a classic look but need gentler care. Porcelain is sleek, heat tolerant and very low maintenance.
If you cook every day and set hot pans down often, start with granite countertops or quartzite countertops. If you want a bright, consistent look with almost no upkeep, look at quartz countertops. Our countertop materials comparison puts all six side by side.
Can I replace countertops without replacing cabinets?
Often, yes. Countertops can be replaced on existing cabinets when the cabinets are sound and level. Stone is heavy, so we check the cabinets during the estimate and templating. The old tops have to come off carefully, and the sink and appliances have to be reconnected after installation. Your estimate spells out what is included.
Keeping your cabinets is one of the most practical ways to refresh a kitchen. New stone, a new sink and a new backsplash can change the whole room while the layout stays the same.
What affects the price of kitchen countertops?
Price depends on the stone you choose, the square footage, the edge profile, the number of sink and cooktop cutouts, and extras like a full height backsplash or a waterfall island. The easiest way to get a real number is to request your countertop estimate with a rough sketch or photos of your kitchen.
Which edges and sinks work best in a kitchen?
Simple eased and half bullnose edges are easy to clean and suit most kitchens, while mitered and waterfall edges make an island look thicker and more modern. See all ten options on our countertop edge profiles page. For sinks, undermount stainless steel is the most common pairing with stone, in single or double bowl layouts. Our countertop sinks page explains the sizes and corner styles.
Where can I see kitchens you have finished?
Browse our project gallery for kitchens with islands, waterfall sides and full height backsplashes, then visit our Nokomis showroom to see the stones in person. Seeing a full slab next to your cabinet color is the best way to decide.

How long does kitchen countertop installation take?
It depends on the size of the kitchen. A large kitchen with several heavy pieces can take a full day, and a small one takes less. Time depends on the number of pieces, the island, the sinks and any removal of old tops, and we will give you a clear plan for your kitchen when we schedule the work.
What should I do to get my kitchen ready?
Clear everything off the countertops and empty the cabinet under the sink. Make a clear path from the door to the kitchen, and plan for pets to stay in another room. Installation creates some dust, so cover nearby furniture or electronics you want to protect. If you use your own plumber, wait for the silicone to cure before reconnecting.
Can I get a backsplash in the same stone as my countertops?
Yes. A backsplash cut from the same slab gives you matching color and veining, and it can be a short 4 inch strip or a full height backsplash up to the cabinets, the range hood or even the ceiling. Full height stone has no grout lines, so it is easy to clean. You will see several examples in our project gallery.
