What is granite?

Granite is natural stone cut into slabs for kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor kitchens. It handles cooking heat well and resists scratches, but it is porous and needs periodic sealing. No two slabs match, so see the real slab at our Nokomis showroom before you choose.

It forms when magma cools slowly deep underground, and it is made mostly of feldspar, quartz and mica, which gives every slab its speckles, flecks and movement. Quarries cut granite into large slabs that are polished, honed or leathered, and then a fabricator shapes each piece to fit your space. That natural variation is a big part of its appeal.

What are the pros and cons of granite?

Granite gives you durability and character in exchange for a little upkeep.

Pros

  • Handles everyday cooking heat very well.
  • Hard to scratch in normal kitchen use.
  • Natural patterns that no factory can copy.
  • Works indoors and outdoors.

Cons

  • Porous, so it needs periodic sealing.
  • Heavy, so cabinets must be sound and level.
  • Pattern varies, so a small sample never tells the whole story.
  • Edges and corners can chip if something heavy hits them.

Is granite good for Florida homes?

Yes. Granite handles Florida heat, humidity and sun well, indoors and on a covered or open lanai. Humidity does not harm sealed granite and the stone does not fade in sunlight, which is why it is a long proven choice for outdoor kitchen countertops. The one thing to keep up is the sealer.

Florida kitchens see plenty of iced drinks, citrus and cooking oil, so keep the surface sealed and wipe spills promptly. Dark granite in direct sun can get hot to the touch, so a lighter color may suit an uncovered outdoor bar.

If you are weighing granite against an engineered surface, our countertop materials comparison lays out heat, sealing and outdoor use side by side, and the quartz countertops page explains the low upkeep option.

How do you care for granite?

Daily care is simple: mild dish soap, warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid vinegar, bleach and abrasive powders, because they wear down the sealer over time. To know when to reseal, use the water test: put a few drops on the counter, and if the stone darkens within a few minutes, it is time to reseal. How often depends on the stone and on how hard the counter works.

Granite countertop questions

Can I put a hot pan on granite?

Granite is one of the most heat tolerant countertop materials, so a warm pot will not hurt it. We still suggest a trivet for pans that come straight off the burner or out of the oven. Sudden, extreme temperature changes can stress any stone, and a trivet also protects the sealer on the surface.

Does granite stain?

Granite can absorb liquids when the sealer wears thin, so cooking oil, red wine or coffee left overnight may leave a mark. A sealed slab resists everyday spills if you wipe them up promptly. If water darkens the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal. Darker granites tend to hide marks better than light ones.

Will my granite countertop look like the sample?

Not exactly. Granite is natural stone, so color, movement and mineral spots change from slab to slab, and even within one slab. A small sample shows the general look, but the full slab is what you will live with. That is why we recommend seeing the actual slab at our Nokomis showroom before you decide.
