What is a countertop remnant?

A remnant is the leftover piece of a stone slab after a larger job is cut. Remnants are smaller than a full slab and often priced lower, which makes them a good fit for vanities, bar tops, laundry rooms and small kitchens. Sunshine Granite & Marble in Nokomis keeps remnants of granite, quartz and other stones.

What can I use a remnant for?

  • Bathroom vanity tops and powder rooms
  • Wet bars and coffee bars
  • Laundry room counters
  • Desks, built in benches and shelves
  • Small islands and side counters
  • Outdoor bar tops, when the stone suits the sun

A vanity is the classic use. See our bathroom vanity tops page for sink and edge options that work on a smaller piece.

Do remnants cost less?

Usually, yes. A remnant costs less because you buy only a small piece of premium stone, not a full slab. Fabrication and installation are priced the same way as any countertop, so ask for a full estimate that includes the edge, the sink cutout and installation.

How do I buy a remnant?

  1. Measure the space, including any backsplash.
  2. Look at the remnants available now on this page, or ask us what came in recently.
  3. Visit our Nokomis showroom to see the piece in person.
  4. Request your countertop estimate for fabrication and installation.

Why does the remnant selection keep changing?

Remnants come from the jobs we cut, so new pieces arrive as projects move through the shop, and others leave with customers. A remnant you see today may be gone soon. If one catches your eye, let us know right away. Want to know more about the stones themselves? Start with granite countertops and quartz countertops.

Remnant questions

What sizes are countertop remnants?

Sizes vary, because each remnant is whatever was left after a larger job was cut. Many are big enough for a single bathroom vanity, a bar top or a small counter, and some are larger. Bring the measurements of your space, including any backsplash, and we will tell you which remnants fit before you fall in love with one.

Are remnants lower quality than full slabs?

No. A remnant is the same stone as the full slab it came from, with the same hardness, finish and color. It is simply a smaller piece. Remnants are fabricated and installed the same way as any countertop, and natural stone remnants need sealing just like a full slab. The only limits are size and the fact that there is usually just one piece of each.

Can I use remnants for a whole kitchen?

Usually not, because most kitchens need more stone than a single remnant holds, and matching two remnants is rarely possible. Remnants shine in separate spaces: a powder room, a laundry room, a wet bar, a desk or a small island. For a full kitchen, choose a slab, and use remnants for the bathrooms or a matching side project.
