What happens during templating?
Templating is the measuring visit before fabrication. A specialist records exact dimensions and confirms edge profile, overhang, backsplash height and sink cutouts with you. A single vanity takes less time than a large kitchen with an island. Cabinets should be installed and level first, so the measurements match what the stone will sit on.
The specialist builds a physical template of your counters and asks the questions that shape the final piece. Would you like rounded or square corners? How much overhang at the island? A waterfall or mitered edge? A full height backsplash? Your answers travel with the template to the shop, where the stone is cut to match. Choosing your countertop edge profiles and your countertop sinks before this visit keeps everything on schedule.
How long does countertop installation take?
It depends on the size of the job. After templating, the stone has to be cut and finished before it can go in, and the wait can vary with the season and the material. A single vanity top goes in faster than a large kitchen with several heavy pieces. We confirm the timing with you when we book your installation.
Why does installation take several people?
Stone is heavy, and a large island can take several people plus carrying bars, handles and equipment to move safely into your home. That is why a clear path from the door to the room matters, and why old countertops have to come off carefully, so the cabinets underneath stay intact.
What happens on installation day?
The crew carries in each piece, sets it on the cabinets, levels it and closes the seams. Undermount sinks are secured with silicone and clips drilled into the stone at the shop, with extra support for heavy fireclay or cast iron sinks. Faucet holes are drilled on site, in front of you, so the position is right. Then the crew applies caulk and silicone where needed and cleans up the work area.
How do I get ready for installation?
Clear the countertops, empty the cabinet under the sink, and make a clear path from the door. Keep pets in another room. If you are replacing tops, plan for the kitchen to be out of use while the work is done. Want to know what happens before the stone arrives? Read about countertop fabrication. Ready to begin? Do I need to be home for templating?
Yes, someone who can make decisions should be there. During templating our specialist asks about edges, overhang, backsplash height and the exact sink and faucet positions. Those answers go straight into how your stone is cut, so having the decision maker present avoids delays. Have your sink, faucet and cooktop details ready if you already chose them.
Will there be dust during installation?
Some, yes. Installation is construction work, and small cuts or adjustments on site create dust. Our installers bring a shop vacuum and clean up the area they worked in, which is a basic cleanup, not a deep clean. We recommend covering nearby furniture and electronics and closing doors to rooms you want to keep clean.
When can the sink be reconnected after installation?
Wait at least 24 to 48 hours after installation before reconnecting the sink, so the silicone that holds an undermount sink can cure. Then a plumber can reconnect the faucet, drain, garbage disposal and dishwasher. Book that visit ahead of time, so your kitchen is back in use soon after the new countertops go in.
